What are Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus. They are also called leiomyomas or myomas. Nearly 35 million women in the United States are affected by them.

Fibroids range in size, undetectable by the human eye, to large masses that can distort the uterus. You can have one single fibroid or multiple.
Many women have uterine fibroids sometime during their lives. It is common patients are unaware of their uterine fibroids because they often cause no symptoms.

TYPES OF FIBROIDS:

Submucosal: Inside the womb.  These cause more heavy bleeding

Intramural: Inside the muscular portion of the uterus.  These can cause bleeding and pain

Subserosal: They grow at the skin of the uterus.  These can cause bulk symptoms such as pain and urgency.

What are the symptoms of Uterine Fibroids?

The symptoms are many, and the most common ones are heavy menstrual bleeding, menstrual periods lasting more than a week, pelvic pressure or pain, frequent urination, difficulty emptying the bladder, constipation, backache or leg pains.

How are Uterine Fibroids detected?

They are often diagnosed with a routine pelvic exam, or pelvic ultrasound, or if the patients have clear symptoms or pain. Other tests include hysteroscopy, using a lighted camera to see inside the uterus, or laparoscopy, using a camera to visualize the pelvic cavity, or MRI in the case of large tumors.

We are the FIRST Gynecologist in the USA to offer 3-D virtual reality MRI visualization of fibroid tumors in order to plan your surgery in greater detail, resulting in more fibroids seen and treated.  Check our reel HERE.

What is the treatment process like?

The consultation

At your initial visit, we will review any previous labs and scans that you provide.  We will also discuss your wants and needs and review all of your options.  If necessary, we will order more tests and decide together your best course of action.  All this in a safe, non-judgemental atmosphere.

The procedure

While these surgeries are usually performed in the hospital, our goal is still the same: effective treatment in a healing environment.  Many of our fibroid treatments are performed as an outpatient, and you can go home the same day.  We will ensure you have your medications and instructions for care at home before you leave the hospital.

The recovery

Depending on the procedure, recovery can be from 7 days for a laproscopic or ultrasound procedure to 6 weeks for a more complicated surgery.  During the first day or two after any procedure, it is best to rest at home to monitor your pain and to keep the bleeding or spotting to a minimum. Make sure to take your prescribed medications. It's also good to keep a symptom or cycle diary to discuss with your provider.

Testimonials

Iris C.

"Jasmine and Trinity are AMAZING practitioners! I have never really felt comfortable with previous gynecologist offices, especially since I've had to experience some fairly rude practitioners in the past-but Jasmine made me feel so comfortable before, during, and after my pap."

Stephanie K.

"I am absolutely amazed! I hate going to the Dr. because usually I book through a large hospital network and have to wait for 3 months before I can be seen. I called the office to see if they took my insurance on Friday, and went in for my first appointment today.
Dr. Williams, was warm, informative, educational, patient, kind, and gentle.  She asked about what I was experiencing, what information I was operating under, then gave me logic, science and facts to back up her recommendations."

Joan D.

"The entire office is warm and welcoming promoting patient confidence in the cutting edge treatments offered. Dr. Williams concern for patient comfort is always a top priority. Every step is explained in such an informative manner that any fear of pain is eliminated. She brought me from feeling miserable to healthy normal. I’ve recommended her to friends and they’ve been extremely grateful. She’s great!"
