What is Endometriosis?
Every month, the uterus expels the blood and tissue that it no longer needs or can use. Occasionally, that tissue may escape into the pelvis and cause debilitating pelvic pain even throughout the cycle. Simply explained, it is tissue growing outside of the uterus.
What are the symptoms of Endometriosis?
Pelvic pain around their menstrual cycle, but constant abdominal or pelvic pain is also common.
Pain with bowel movements, urination, and intercourse.
Infertility.
Why do I have Endometriosis?
The working theory behind endometriosis is "retrograde menstruation." Instead of leaving the body, the tissue stays in the pelvis. We do not know why some women get endometriosis and others do not. Endometriosis has also been discovered in c-section scars, the belly button, and even in the lungs!

Am I at risk for Endometriosis?
Some risk factors for endometriosis may include never given birth, starting your period at an early age, going through menopause at an older age, and short menstrual cycles — for instance, less than 27 days. Also, having heavy menstrual periods that last longer than seven days, having higher levels of estrogen in your body, or low body mass index. Having relatives (mother, aunt or sister) with endometriosis is also a risk factor given family genetics.
What are the treatment options for Endometriosis?
Medications (e.g. pain medications, hormone balancing medications).
Alternative strategies (e.g. diet modification, physical therapy, acupuncture).

Our physicians are well aware that most patients want to keep their reproductive organs in order to get pregnant in the future. Our physician meticulously works around the reproductive organs to ensure they are safe.

What is the treatment process for Minimally Invasive Endometriosis Surgery?
The consultation
At your initial visit, we will review your menstrual history and any previous labs and scans that you provide. We will also discuss your wants and needs and review all of your options. If necessary, we will order more tests and decide together your best course of action. All this in a safe, non-judgemental atmosphere.
The procedure
While these surgeries are usually performed in the hospital, our goal is still the same: effective treatment in a healing environment. Many of our endometriosis treatments are performed as an outpatient, and you can go home the same day. We will ensure you have your medications and instructions for care at home before you leave the hospital
The recovery
Depending on the procedure, recovery can be from 7 days for a laproscopic procedure to 6 weeks for a more complicated surgery. During the first day or two after any procedure, it is best to rest at home to monitor your pain. Make sure to take your prescribed medications. It's also good to keep a symptom or cycle diary to discuss with your provider to monitor your progress after surgery.
Is Endometriosis treatment right for me?
We treat many patients in all ages, patients who have had children, patients who never had children, and patients who are busy with their careers. Pelvic pain, abdominal pain, and pain when urinating are common symptoms amongst our patients.
